The Science of Getting Better.

Most people who have struggled with their weight for years do not need another list of foods they should and should not eat.
They know.
They have counted calories. Cut carbohydrates. Tried intermittent fasting. Joined programmes. Exercised harder. Lost weight, regained it, and started again.
The Sona Method begins somewhere different.
Instead of asking only "How do we make you lose weight?", we ask "Why has maintaining a healthier weight become so difficult for you?"
WEIGHT IS AN OUTCOME
Body weight is influenced by energy intake and expenditure. But what determines those behaviours and processes can be considerably more complicated.
Appetite. Satiety. Sleep. Insulin sensitivity. Hormones. Medications. Stress physiology. Muscle mass. Activity. Menopause. Food environment. Habit. Emotion. Previous dieting. Medical conditions.
These factors do not abolish the laws of energy balance.
They help determine how difficult living within them becomes.
The question is not whether energy balance matters. It is what is driving yours.
WHY WEIGHT COMES BACK
Many diets can produce short-term weight loss.
The more difficult question is what happens afterwards.
If the strategy requires constant hunger, rigid restriction, extraordinary willpower, or a way of eating that cannot coexist with normal life, weight regain should not automatically be interpreted as failure.
A useful strategy needs to consider not only whether weight can be lost, but whether the conditions that produced the original weight gain have actually changed.
The goal is not another successful diet. It is making the next diet unnecessary.
WHAT IS YOUR BODY TELLING US?
Perhaps weight gain appeared alongside fatigue.
Or menopause. Poor sleep. Increased hunger. Cravings. Changes in mood. Reduced activity. Insulin resistance. Thyroid problems. Medication. Chronic stress. Digestive problems. Pain. A major change in life.
The chronology matters.
Rather than beginning with a predetermined weight-loss programme, The Sona Method reconstructs what changed, when it changed, and what else was happening at the same time.
That creates a clinical hypothesis about what may be making weight regulation more difficult for you.
Sometimes the most useful question is not "What should I stop eating?" but "What changed?"
BEYOND WILLPOWER
Behaviour matters enormously.
But good clinical work should make useful behaviour easier, not simply demand more of it.
If someone is constantly hungry, exhausted, sleeping badly, experiencing powerful cravings, eating emotionally, or living with metabolic or hormonal changes, telling them to exercise more restraint adds very little information.
The Sona Method looks at both physiology and behaviour and asks what needs to change so that healthier choices become more sustainable.
Willpower can start a diet. It is a poor long-term treatment plan.
THE INVESTIGATION
Assessment considers your weight history, eating patterns, appetite, previous diets, sleep, activity, medications, medical history, hormonal history, metabolic health, emotional and behavioural patterns, and other symptoms.
Where clinically appropriate, existing or further investigations may help assess areas such as blood-sugar regulation, lipids, thyroid function, nutritional status, or other relevant metabolic and hormonal factors.
Testing is not performed simply because somebody wants to lose weight.
It is used when there is a clinical question worth answering.
A DIFFERENT END POINT
Food matters. Movement matters. Body composition matters.
So do health, energy, strength, enjoyment, social life, and your relationship with food.
The objective is not simply to force the scale down at any cost.
It is to identify the factors that can realistically be changed, improve the wider health picture, and create a way of eating and living that does not require your weight to occupy your thoughts all day.
Your life should become larger, even if your body becomes smaller.
